From the Desk of Mary Federico
Hello and welcome to Montowese School. There are many new and exciting initiatives we are implementing for the 2013-2014 school year. Math In Focus is now implemented in grades K-5. Our math curriculum is aligned to the Common Core Standards and this new math program promotes higher level thinking and math reasoning. We have completed writing 2 Language Arts units of study using a Concept Based Curriculum, as well as aligning these units to the Common Core Standards. A Readers’ Wkshop model will be used to teach these units.
Our School Improvement Plan, which is aligned to Student Learning Objectives, will drive our instruction this year. Montowese continues to implement a daily 30 minute block of time in which many of our staff will be working with small groups of students to address skills needed to improve student performance. These skill groups are aligned to our School Improvement Plan.
We have begun to roll out our Positive Behavior Support Plan! This is an approach to teaching, and supporting positive behaviors to meet the needs of ALL students. This district wide approach to discipline focuses on building a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn. The foundation of PBIS at Montowese are the three building wide expectations: Respect Self, Respect Others, and Respect School. Our mascot, the Macaroni Penguin (MAC… Montowese Always Cares), is posted throughout our school with reminders of behavioral expectations throughout all areas of our building.
Reminder/ Birthday Celebrations:
Every child will be recognized on their birthday by having their name announced over the intercom system and will receive a prize that day. To eliminate loss of instructional time throughout the month each classroom will celebrate students' birthdays the last school day of each month.
Montowese School is a great place to be. The staff and I anticipate an enriching, exciting school year. We look forward working with the entire school community. Thank you for your continued support and participation in creating an environment where children become successful learners and enjoy coming to school each day.
