Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I’m delighted to join the Montowese community and work collaboratively with you to help support our students in fostering an enjoyment of learning and creativity. It’s our school’s utmost priority to provide students with multiple opportunities to explore, achieve, and reach their fullest potential as we prepare them for the future. We follow our district’s mission: to develop responsible, educated and productive global citizens who can thrive in an ever changing world.

At Montowese we are committed to providing an enriching environment for all students and use data to drive our instruction. The school continues to implement a daily 30-minute block of time in which many of our staff work with small groups of students to address skills needed to improve student performance. These skill groups are aligned to our School Improvement Plan. We are also implementing our second year of Writer’s Workshop (K-5) through Columbia’s Teacher’s College and are also using the Reader’s Workshop model during literacy. Math In Focus (K-5) promotes higher level thinking and a deeper conceptual knowledge of numbers and reasoning.

PBIS: Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports

We are excited to announce that Montowese was named a model school for PBIS in the 2015-2016 school year. Students are learning the foundations of this approach which include teaching and supporting positive behaviors to meet the needs of all students. Our building focuses on fostering a safe and positive environment in which all students can learn. Montowese has three building wide expectations: Respect Self, Respect Others, and Respect School. Our mascot, the Macaroni Penguin (MAC… Montowese Always Cares), is posted throughout our school with reminders of behavioral expectations throughout all areas of our building.

PTA: Parent Teacher Association

Montowese has a wonderful PTA committed to helping support students with extended learning opportunities through in-school programs, providing our students with supplies, supporting various charities, hosting monthly family nights, and much more. The committee encourages families and community members to participate in our school events throughout the year. Consider becoming a member of the PTA!

Communication between home and school throughout the year is essential to ensure student success. You will find that my door is always open. Please feel free to stop in or call any time to meet with me and to discuss any suggestions or ideas to help make this the best year yet!

The staff and I anticipate an exciting and successful school year. Thank you for your continued support and participation in creating an environment where children become successful learners and enjoy coming to school each day.

Sincerely,

Kathryn Russo
